My Thoughts On…Shadowhunters TV Show | Episode 1: The Mortal Cup

Shadowhunters. The time has finally come! After months upon months of waiting for its release, the first episode of the Shadowhunters TV show, based off of the bestselling The Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare, came out on Netflix—and naturally I had to watch it! I’ve seen tons of posts lately from other bloggers sharing their thoughts on the first and/or second episode, so I decided, why not? I have a lot of thoughts to share on it, so let’s get started.

Thoughts on Shadowhunters

Let’s start with the best and good parts, shall we?

Castings and Characters

  • Simon WAS PERFECT. I must admit, I wasn’t completely sold on Alberto Rosende (the actor) at first, but after seeing him in the first episode, I gotta say, he’s great. Fingers crossed that the great acting will continue!
  • Simon and Clary’s friendship was sweet! Simon and Clary got along really well, and I really liked how the two actors pulled off their friendship.

trailer-de-shadowhunters

  • Alec‘s portrayal by Alexander (CORRECTION: Matthew) Daddario was really great. Mostly it’s just that Alec was basically everything I imagined him to be like! Protective of Jace and Isabelle, hostile to Clary. Can’t wait to see more of him as the show continues.
  • As for Isabelle (Emeraude Toubia), I have to admit that I was expecting her to be more, I don’t know, hostile and more angry. I feel like the show tamed her down a bit more in comparison with the books. I really liked the actress who played her, though! And although some of her lines were terrible, I liked her parts well enough. (She could still kick butt, that’s for sure.)

  • Alan Van Sprang shone through as Valentine! He wasn’t exactly how I pictured him, but he turned out to be pretty good.
  • Jocelyn (Maxim Roy), too, was alright. I was kind of? skeptical of both her and Valentine’s casting, but she turned out to be alright as well. (But why on earth did she give Clary a stele??)

Plot

  • The Pandemonium scenes were really good! Not horrible, at least. Especially the part where Jace, Alec and Isabelle was hunting down the demon (though what was the use of Isabelle’s wig when she takes it off anyway?)
  • To be honest I’m not quite sure how I feel yet about the inclusion of the mundane blood thing going on, but for now I’m just gonna place it with the good parts of the episode, because, well, it wasn’t necessarily a bad addition. Obviously there has to be some changes where the plot’s concerned to not make it identical to the book.
  • Having Luke as a policeman was an interesting idea! I wasn’t sure if I’d like it, when I first heard of it, but now it doesn’t seem to be that bad.
  • I feel like there’s more I have to say about the storyline and everything, but… my memory kind of sucks right now?

Where things became ‘meh’

  • So.. Maureen is friends with Simon and Clary, and is the same age as them now? Not sure how I feel about this either. I suppose it’s not exactly a bad thing, but it has me questioning as to where it will lead.
  • The special effects. More specifically, the portal. I’ve been seeing talk about how the show’s on a low budget and everything, but really? Was that the best they could do? Again, it wasn’t BAD persay, but it could’ve been better.
  • Magnus Bane… what even happened? I’m not even sure how to explain this one. His character just seemed so.. wrong somehow? Maybe? I don’t know. (I seem to be repeating ‘I don’t know’ really often, but oh well…)
  • The institute is now full of people and really modernized… not sure how I feel about this??

Reasons for angry stomping and lots of frowns:

  • DON’T EVEN GET ME STARTED ON THE DIALOGUE. Gah. Sometimes I was able to ignore it, but there were several times where the dialogue became cheesy and clichĆ© as hell. I cringe just thinking about some of them.. PLEASE MAKE THIS BETTER, I BEG YOU. (Don’t ask to whom I’m begging… I don’t know, maybe the gods of TV shows?? #Totallymakessense)
  • The acting. NOT ALL of the acting, mind you. Most specifically I mean the delivery of lines from Dom Sherwood and occasionally other actors. But mostly Dominic, who plays Jace. I swear, the way he says his lines makes me cringe. Don’t ask why, because I can’t really pinpoint the reason… but let’s just say right now I can’t seem to fully accept him as Jace. I really hope he improves as the show goes on…
  • No chemistry between Kat and Dom. Dominic looked like he’s in pain half the time anyway and had terrible lines, but still. None. Nada. If there was any, I was oblivious to it. Which is quite a shame! There was a lot of places where the movie went wrong, but on-screen chemistry wise, Movie-Clary (Lily Collins) and Movie-Jace (Jamie Campbell Bower) were great. Or at least, pretty decent. So it was kind of sad to see that the show lacked this. Having said that, I’m not too sad seeing how this is only the first episode. BUT STILL.
  • What happened to the weapons?!! Those seraph blades look like cheap plastic lightsabers.. and just… no. What happened to the naming and all of that? Grrrr.

Phew…I think that’s mostly it! At least, that’s all that currently pops into my brain. The show has been getting some mixed opinions as far as I’ve seen, but to me, it wasn’t horrible. It didn’t follow the book page-for-page, but it did keep some of the main events and key details, and it still was entertaining despite the meh and the bad parts—so I will definitely be continuing the series! Plus, it’s just the first episode, right? Plenty of room for improvement and second chances.

Do let me know what YOUR thoughts on the show are! I haven’t decided yet if I’m going to continue to write a post for each episode… maybe I’ll do one post at the end of each month with comments on each of the episodes released during that month? Whatever the case is, right now, let me know whatever thoughts you may have about the first (and/or second) episode, or just this show in general. Discussion is always fun! šŸ˜€

Enjoy the rest of your weekend! ā¤

‘Shadowhunters’ TV Show Teaser Trailers & Casting Updates, Lady Midnight Cover Reveal, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies TRAILER + More! | Book News

Hello everybody! It’s been a long time since I’ve posted updates on any news relating to books, and with the things I have today, I decided it’s finally time to do an all-round book news post! I have a lot of different types of things to share with you all today, so let’s get on with it! ā¤

‘Shadowhunters’ TV Show

So, a lot has been going on for this tv show in the making since my last update on it. We have been getting tons of promo pictures, videos and more—but now we also have a full 1 minute and 3o second teaser trailer! Check it out below:

Overall, I think it’s really good! A lot of it seems to be different from the book, but it has potential. I did especially like the glimpse of Jace’s personality in Dominic Sherwood! And I think Katherine McNamara seems to be doing a good job as Clary. šŸ™‚ So excited for the show!

There has also been a promo teaser trailer clip released–unfortunately I couldn’t see it since it apparently couldn’t be viewed in my country , but here it is!

Casting Updates

We have several new castings to add to the ever-growing Shadowhunter crew! Introducing:

Now we have our completeĀ Lightwood family! Yay! Max is totally adorable, even if he’s not exactly how I imagined him, and I’m liking the casting for Maryse as well. I’m not sure about what I think about the casting for Robert, but I guess it could work?

We also have some other castings:

Lydia Branwell‘ is an original character created for the show, who apparently will be aĀ descendant of Charlotte and Henry Branwell in The Infernal Devices. I don’t know how exactly it will play out, but the actress sure looks stunning!

As for the casting of Imogen Herondale, she’s not exactly how I imagined, but I think maybe she has what it takes to pull it off? Maybe. And the casting for Ragnor Fell seems to be okay. I don’t even know if Ragnor will be having a big role in the show, so even if I didn’t like him, it would be bearable.

That’s it, as far as I know! Feel free to check out my thoughts on the casting of: Jace,Ā Simon and Isabelle,Ā Clary,Ā Alec and Luke,Ā Valentine and Magnus,Ā Jocelyn Fray, andĀ Hodge StarkweatherĀ if you haven’t already! Or if you simply want to check out all the castings so far (apart from the ones mentioned in this post of course), press here.

Cover Reveals

I have two covers recently revealed that I want to share! First and foremost, the cover for Lady Midnight has been released!! Here it is, in all its glory:

Lady Midnight

I think it looks super cool, though there does seem to be something about it that is nagging at my brain which I can’t seem to put my finger on… I like it, but I don’t know if I fully do. Does that make sense? In any case, this book is slated for a March 8 2016 release, I believe? I honestly can’t wait!

As for the other cover news I wanted to share…this one I first found out about through Cristina @Ā My Tiny Obsessions:

The Rose and the Dagger

Yep, the cover for The Rose and the DaggerĀ has been revealed! I absolutely loved The Wrath and the Dawn—review here—and after the cliffhanger in that book, I simply am dying to read the sequel!

As for what I think of The Rose and the Dagger’s cover; well, the blue might be kind of hard to get used to, and at first I was pretty skeptical that I’d like it, but I think it will probably grow on me sooner or later. šŸ™‚

Movie Trailers

The trailer for a new book-to-movie adaptation (Pride and Prejudice and Zombies by Seth Grahame-Smith) was released today! Check it out below:

I haven’t read the book, although I had considered it several times. So I’m not quite sure what to expect from the film, but it seems intriguing!

On another note, the second official trailer of Mockingjay Part 2 was released 3 days ago! Here it is:

I am more excited than ever for this to be released!! I can’t wait to watch it!

And last but not least, although this is nowhere near current news, a while ago the trailer for The Fifth Wave (by Rick Yancey), another book-to-movie adaptation in the making, was released!

I definitely hope it will turn out good! I’m pretty good with the cast right now, though I’m interested in seeing how they’ll handle the many POVs in the book.

So that’s it for my book news post! I hope I helped with giving you at least some new updates on something. šŸ˜‰ What do you think of all these; the Shadowhunters TV show trailer, the new castings, the cover reveals, the movie trailers? Let me know your thoughts below! I’d love to know what you think. ā¤

I hope you guys are all enjoying your weekend!

Until the Next Meal, Analee

Book News | ‘Shadowhunters’ TV Show Casting Updates

Hi there! It’s been a while since I did a casting update for the ‘Shadowhunters’ TV Show, so today I decided to post an update on all the additions to the cast, which are more of recurring and minor characters than main characters.

So, we now have:

All joining the cast of:

Quite a lot of cast members! I think I’m mostly good with all the new castings, and while they’re important characters, I suppose my opinion on them can be easily swayed as they’re recurring characters and even if I don’t like them, I won’t be seeing much of them (for most of these castings anyway).

However, I am wary of Lisa Marcos’s casting as Captain Vargas and Mouna TraorĆ© as Midori, not because of the actors themselves, more of their castings. Captain Vargas and Midori aren’t characters from the book, so I’m quite hesitant when it comes to them.

Also, Dorothea is being aged down, and is given the name Dot, and apparently she isn’t going to have the same role as in the books. Wonder what that will be like…

So there we have it! An update on the Shadowhunter TV show cast. What do you think of these castings? Like ’em? Dislike ’em? Let me know in the comments below!

Book News | ‘Shadowhunters’ TV Show Casting Update: Simon & Isabelle

Hi there! I’m super excited to present this little casting update on The Mortal Instruments (series by Cassandra Clare) TV show, ‘Shadowhunters’ (check out my post on it here): they’ve casted Isabelle and Simon!

As most of you know, Dominic Sherwood has been cast as Jace, and now we have Alberto Rosende and Emeraude Toubia joining the cast!

Alberto Rosende & Emeraude Toubia as Simon and Isabelle
Alberto Rosende & Emeraude Toubia as Simon and Isabelle

I have to admit, Alberto Rosende is far from what I had in mind for Simon. I really liked Robert Sheehan as Simon in the City of Bones movie, and I’m kind of disappointed he’s not coming back for the show, although in the back of my mind I expected it. I’m definitely going to keep an open mind, and hopefully I’ll come to see him more of a Simon.

As for Emeraude Toubia as Isabelle, I can kind of see it, however again I feel like Jemima West (from the movie) did a pretty good job for Isabelle. I’m not against Emeraude as Isabelle, I just have not completely come to terms with it yet. I haven’t seen any of the previous movies she’s been in, so I can’t say what I think of her acting skills, so I’m looking forward to seeing how she is.

Overall, I can’t completely see in my mind these two actors as Simon and Isabelle, but hopefully that will change as I watch the show.

What are your thoughts on this little casting news? Agree with it? Disagree? Indifferent? Let me know in the comments below! I’d love to know your opinions.

Book News | The Mortal Instruments TV Show + Jace Casting

I wasn’t planning on posting today, but this recent news I found out about compels me to. If you haven’t guessed from the title of this post, the recent news in question is about The Mortal Instruments TV show!

Yep, you heard me!

Cassandra Clare’s worldwide best-selling YA series The Mortal Instruments has been picked up by ABC Family to be turned into a TV show.

Totally me at this moment! šŸ™‚

Since the City of Bones movie was a disappointment in comparison with the book, I am super excited to see how the producers will be filming the show (which is being named ‘Shadowhunters’). I mean, the movie was okay, but it didn’t do the book justice at all.

There has not been much casting information yet except for the male lead of Jace Wayland: it will be played by Dominic Sherwood, previously seen inĀ the film production of Vampire Academy: Blood Sisters based on the book by Richelle Mead. Previous Mortal Instruments stars Lily Collins and Jamie Campbell-Bower do not seem to be returning for the TV show, presumedly because ‘Shadowhunters’ is to have a clean slate and distance itself a bit from the box-office flop movie released in 2013.

For moreĀ information about production, etc. press HERE.

I for one, am looking forward to seeing how the show will hit off! I really hope this time the producers will stick more to the books! I’m fine with a bit of tweaking here and there, but to change it up a lot results in a flop, and I do hope they realize that.

So, are you excited for this show, or do you think it’s not worth your time? What do you think about Dominic Sherwood playing Jace? Comment below! I’d love to hear from you. ā¤
