Magonia by Maria Dahvana Headley | Book Review

(Magonia #1)

Published: April 28th 2015

Synopsis:

Aza Ray is drowning in thin air.

Since she was a baby, Aza has suffered from a mysterious lung disease that makes it ever harder for her to breathe, to speak—to live.

So when Aza catches a glimpse of a ship in the sky, her family chalks it up to a cruel side effect of her medication. But Aza doesn’t think this is a hallucination. She can hear someone on the ship calling her name.

Only her best friend, Jason, listens. Jason, who’s always been there. Jason, for whom she might have more-than-friendly feelings. But before Aza can consider that thrilling idea, something goes terribly wrong. Aza is lost to our world—and found, by another. Magonia.

Above the clouds, in a land of trading ships, Aza is not the weak and dying thing she was. In Magonia, she can breathe for the first time. Better, she has immense power—and as she navigates her new life, she discovers that war is coming. Magonia and Earth are on the cusp of a reckoning. And in Aza’s hands lies the fate of the whole of humanity—including the boy who loves her. Where do her loyalties lie?

Hello! Today I have a review on Magonia by Maria Dahvana Headley. I finally read this book, as part of a Goodreads read-along (hosted by The Book Club of Opinionated Hufflepuffs). I finished this book pretty quickly, considering it was 320 pages, which I translate to: addictive! After reading it, I will admit that I was quite conflicted, but I’ve finally sorted out my thoughts to say that I liked it. In the end I would say this book deserves a solid 3.5 stars. And I’m so happy about that! This book seemed like such a book, and although it wasn’t quite what I expected, it was still enjoyable and I’m interested in seeing what the second book will be like.

Quick Summary

Aza was always going to die. She’s literally choking on thin air, and the doctors all predicted she would die. When Aza sees a ship in the sky, calling out to her, everyone thinks it’s simply a hallucination, except her best friend Jason. But then one day Aza wakes up, stronger than ever to find that she’s crucial to the survival of a whole new world—Magonia. Will Aza be able to let go of the people she loves on Earth to do what she need to do?Read More »

WWW Wednesday #16 (July 22)

Hey there fellow bookworms! It’s time for a WWW Wednesday post, a meme formerly hosted by MizB @ Should be Reading and now hosted by Sam @Taking on a World of Words. To play along, answer the three questions:

What are you currently reading?
What did you recently finish reading?
What do you think you’ll read next?

Currently Reading

I’m currently reading 3 books. I’m enjoying them all, even Yes Please, to my delight. 🙂 Usually books like Yes, Please isn’t my thing, but I guess I’m okay with it so far. What You Left Behind is an e-ARC I was approved for on Netgalley, and I’m also really liking it! I actually think I might be able to finish it today or tomorrow. Like Candy is a review copy and is also pretty good! This week’s current reads are looking pretty good so far, thankfully! 🙂

Recently Finished

I finished 6 books throughout this week:

Oh god, just looking at this list shows me how behind on my reviews. In my defense though, I have lots of books I’m reading! But still. No excuse for my slacking…again. Either way, I enjoyed most of these, although The Almost Moon & Hello, I Love You are… still under debate, let’s say. It took me a LONG time (like, REALLY LONG) to get through The Almost Moon. I don’t know, I had other books I was reading, and I just wasn’t in the mood to read The Almost Moon most of the time. Magonia, Spellbinder and The Heartbreakers, on the other hand, were super quick reads; they were all addicting and I finished them really quickly!

Read Next

Learning to Swim and Me Before You are both for my Popsugar challenge. After I read read those I think I’ll have only a few left! XD Hide and Seek is the fourth book in The Lying Game series, as I recently finished the third book, I felt compelled to continue with the next book! I finally got a Netgalley account (Yay!! I’m so excited!) and I got approved for an e-ARC of Until We Meet Again. It’s on my TBR and I’m super excited to read it! Simon vs and Made You Up have both been quite hyped up in the bookish community, and I really want to read them this week! I’ve heard such great things.

So that’s it for this week’s WWW Wednesday! What do you think of my books this week? What books have you been reading now, then and next? Let me know in the comments below or link your post!

Have a great Wednesday!

Teaser Tuesday #14 (July 14): Magonia by Maria Dahvana Headley

Hello fellow bookworms! Have you guessed it yet? ‘Tis time for another Teaser Tuesday! This meme is hosted by A Daily Rhythm. All you have to do to join in is:

• Grab your current read
• Open to a random page
• Share two (2) (I’m doing one) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
• BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
• Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!

Magonia_bookcoverToday I have a teaser for you from one of the books I’m currently reading, Magonia by Maria Dahvana Headley.

“Celestial alphabets. Writing that gets rewritten as the earth moves. If you look at the sky that way, it’s this massive shifting poem, or maybe a letter, first written by one author, and then, when the earth moves, annotated by another. So I stare and stare until, one day, I can read it.”

I’m not sure what I think of this book yet. I don’t know, I’m finding it kind of hard to get into? Although that’s probably not because of the book, more maybe because I’m just not in the mood to read at the moment. Hopefully I like it by the end of the book!

Happy reading!
