Made You Up by Francesca Zappia | Book Review

(Stand-Alone)

Published: May 19th 2015

Synopsis:

Reality, it turns out, is often not what you perceive it to be—sometimes, there really is someone out to get you. Made You Up tells the story of Alex, a high school senior unable to tell the difference between real life and delusion. This is a compelling and provoking literary debut that will appeal to fans of Wes Anderson, Silver Linings Playbook, and Liar.

Alex fights a daily battle to figure out the difference between reality and delusion. Armed with a take-no-prisoners attitude, her camera, a Magic 8-Ball, and her only ally (her little sister), Alex wages a war against her schizophrenia, determined to stay sane long enough to get into college. She’s pretty optimistic about her chances until classes begin, and she runs into Miles. Didn’t she imagine him? Before she knows it, Alex is making friends, going to parties, falling in love, and experiencing all the usual rites of passage for teenagers. But Alex is used to being crazy. She’s not prepared for normal.

Funny, provoking, and ultimately moving, this debut novel featuring the quintessential unreliable narrator will have readers turning the pages and trying to figure out what is real and what is made up.

Hello! Today I have for you a review on Made You Up by Francesca Zappia. I absolutely fell in love with this book and the author, it was simply fantastic. The plot was full of unpredictable twists and throughout it all had such a cute romance! Not to mention the mental illness that the story revolved around. This is one of the few times I read a book with an unreliable narrator, and Francesca Zappia absolutely nailed it. I loved Alex, and Miles!! They were both so wonderful. No, actually, all the characters were great, and the writing style was wonderful. ❤ The praise is endless!

Quick Summary

Alex is schizophrenic. She hears things. Hallucinates. Every day she struggles to know what is real and what is made up. She’s determined to prove to her family and doctors that she’ll be able pass high school and get into college, and most of the time, it seems like she’s succeeding. But when you enter Miles into the picture, and a whole bunch of confusion between what’s real and what’s not, things get difficult. Alex was never normal. But is she ready to be?Read More »

WWW Wednesday #17 (July 29th)

Hello! It’s time for WWW Wednesday, a meme formerly hosted by MizB @ Should be Reading and now hosted by Sam @Taking on a World of Words. To play along, answer the three questions:

What are you currently reading?
What did you recently finish reading?
What do you think you’ll read next?

Currently Reading

I am currently reading 2 books; (a record low for me these days) Me Before You by Jojo Moyes & Hide and Seek by Sara Shepard.

Recently Finished

I finished 6 books this past week:

So far I only have a review on Simon vs, [which you can check out here] but I will be posting a review on Made You Up later this week, along with a review on What You Left Behind. Hopefully. I’m still trying to sort out my thoughts on Yes, Please, so I can’t really guarantee a review on it yet. In any case, I did enjoy the majority of these, especially Simon vs., Made You Up and What You Left Behind.

Read Next

Wow, I can’t believe the number of contemporaries I’ve been reading lately! I must really get to some fantasy and paranormal reads, I’m missing out on so many of them! Lol.
I can’t wait to read The Summer of Chasing Mermaids, I read so many great reviews on it (like Summer’s one) and I really want to read it, along with Finding Audrey, I’ve heard great things about that one too. I’ve also heard good things about Your Voice is All I Hear and Until We Meet Again, and I got approved for them on Netgalley so I can’t wait to start them both! The last two books are books I will be reading as part of August read-alongs, I’m so excited to start them, especially readalong for The Wrath and the Dawn, which is being hosted by Bibliophile Gathering  .

So that’s it for this week’s WWW Wednesday! What have you been reading now, then and next? Let me know in the comments below or link your post! Happy Wednesday!

Summertime Madness Book Tag!

Hi there! I was tagged to do this tag by the lovely ladies @ Bibliophile Gathering, Taylor & Stephanie. I saw this tag around, and with the summer-y season here in Canada, this is perfect! Let’s get started!

Summertime Madness Book Tag

1. Show a book with a summery cover!

There are so many to choose for this one! But I’m going to go with:

The Fill-In Boyfriend by Kasie West

The Fill-In Boyfriend by Kasie West

This cover is totally summery! Just look at it! I happen to have also read this book (I loved it), if you want you can check it out here.

2.Pick one fictional place that would be the perfect destination for a summer vacation!

Huh! This one’s a hard one! But I think I’m going to have to go with what another blogger, Ashley, chose:

A Court of Thorns & Roses_bookcover

A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas

The Spring Court in Prythian would be a great summer vacation destination! It would be great to just relax and have fun there. Preferably with Feyre, Lucien and the rest of the ACOTAR crew. 😉

3.You’re about to go on a flight to your summer vacation. But you want to read a book that lasts for the whole flight, what novella do you choose?

I don’t know, to be honest. I don’t read many novellas. I suppose I’d probably go with a full-length novel like:

Made You Up_bookcover

Made You Up by Francesca Zappia

I recently finished this book and it was amazing!! And it would be perfect for a plane trip. (Review coming soon!)

4. You have a case of summertime sadness what happy book do you pick up to shine a smile on your face?

Ooh, this one is an easy one!

Simon vs the Homo Sapiens Agenda_bookcover

Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli

This book immediately comes to mind (probably because it was a very recent read)! This book was just so amazing and this is perfect for making a smile appear! (I’ll be posting a review on it tomorrow, keep an eye out for that!)

5.You’re sitting at the beach all alone…which fictional character would be your beach babe?

Hmm… I’m going to try and pick someone from a book I haven’t used yet (sorry, Lucien & Rhysand!) so I suppose…any of the characters from my (if I do say so myself) awesome list of book boyfriends I made for the Secret Life of a Book Blogger tag. XD Fine, fine, specifics, specifics.
I suppose I might choose Leo, or Percy, both from the Heroes of Olympus series by Rick Riordan, or Levi from Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell, mostly because they’re all super funny and I think they would be great to have around on a beach to have fun!

6. To match your ice cream you want an icy cool sidekick! Which fictional side kick do you pick?

Arg, this one’s a hard one! I think I’m going to choose…

Annabeth Chase from the Percy Jackson & the Olympians by Rick Riordan

7. Share the Summertime Happiness! Who do you TAG?

I don’t usually tag so many people in book tags, but I’m feeling the summery mood today, so… happy tagging! ❤

WWW Wednesday #16 (July 22)

Hey there fellow bookworms! It’s time for a WWW Wednesday post, a meme formerly hosted by MizB @ Should be Reading and now hosted by Sam @Taking on a World of Words. To play along, answer the three questions:

What are you currently reading?
What did you recently finish reading?
What do you think you’ll read next?

Currently Reading

I’m currently reading 3 books. I’m enjoying them all, even Yes Please, to my delight. 🙂 Usually books like Yes, Please isn’t my thing, but I guess I’m okay with it so far. What You Left Behind is an e-ARC I was approved for on Netgalley, and I’m also really liking it! I actually think I might be able to finish it today or tomorrow. Like Candy is a review copy and is also pretty good! This week’s current reads are looking pretty good so far, thankfully! 🙂

Recently Finished

I finished 6 books throughout this week:

Oh god, just looking at this list shows me how behind on my reviews. In my defense though, I have lots of books I’m reading! But still. No excuse for my slacking…again. Either way, I enjoyed most of these, although The Almost Moon & Hello, I Love You are… still under debate, let’s say. It took me a LONG time (like, REALLY LONG) to get through The Almost Moon. I don’t know, I had other books I was reading, and I just wasn’t in the mood to read The Almost Moon most of the time. Magonia, Spellbinder and The Heartbreakers, on the other hand, were super quick reads; they were all addicting and I finished them really quickly!

Read Next

Learning to Swim and Me Before You are both for my Popsugar challenge. After I read read those I think I’ll have only a few left! XD Hide and Seek is the fourth book in The Lying Game series, as I recently finished the third book, I felt compelled to continue with the next book! I finally got a Netgalley account (Yay!! I’m so excited!) and I got approved for an e-ARC of Until We Meet Again. It’s on my TBR and I’m super excited to read it! Simon vs and Made You Up have both been quite hyped up in the bookish community, and I really want to read them this week! I’ve heard such great things.

So that’s it for this week’s WWW Wednesday! What do you think of my books this week? What books have you been reading now, then and next? Let me know in the comments below or link your post!

Have a great Wednesday!

So excited for all these! ❤ Especially P.S. I Still Love You! Finally got my copy.

So that’s it for this month’s book haul! I got most of these at great prices, so I suppose it was a pretty good haul—except for the fact that I’m now out of money to buy books, while there are a ton of books I want to buy next month. *Sigh.*
