Big and popular books I’m avoiding // Because hype + long books are scary?

In case you missed it, Big Books + Hype = EXTREME FEAR.

This is fact, okay. FACT. Decided by me, the Very Honest, Never Ever EVER Hyperbolic Queen.

So, “big” can kind of vary (because I am an unpredictable potato), but generally I’ll label anything from around 400 or mid-400 onwards as being a big book??

And okay, sure, I totally understand that fantasy books often have to be long because of how much content and world it needs to explore, but from simply a reader’s perspective, big books can be kind of a hassle. 😂

  • They take more time –> time is precious –> also more of a need for the book to be amazing because you spend so much time on it??
  • I like completing goals!! And overall succeeding!! But then in the time it takes for me to read one big book, I could’ve maybe finished 2 smaller books and that’s better for my GR challenge 😂😅
  • What if it disappoints??? Double the disappointment because it’s double the size of a normal book!!
  • I’m a lazy person
  • My logic is flawless
  • Often times the book doesn’t really even NEED to be that long (*cough* The Unexpected Everything *cough*) and so then it’s just filler which is annoying
  • THEY’RE SO HEAVY AND INTIMIDATING
  • What if they fall from my shelf and break my head
  • This is a true fear

Older hyped books

A Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin (848 pages)

Okay, barring the fact that there’s incest and all the characters die over and over or something tragic like that, THESE BOOKS ARE SO FREAKING BIG. Like omg I can’t even.

WHYYY are these books so big.

Not for world building or anything obviously

Am I ever going to read these? Uhhhhh.

The Host by Stephenie Meyer (620 pages)

Will I ever read this?? Hahahahah nope, probably not.

It’s just not my cup of tea??

Also it’s just wayyyyy too long PLEASE SPARE ME.

The Diviners by Libba Bray (578 pages)

I heard so much about The Diviners!! But I’m very skeptical because GOSH THAT’S LONG and I’m 99.9% sure it doesn’t need to be that long.

What a large commitment I cry

Seraphina by Rachel Hartman (500 pages)

I heard of dragons!! I might read this someday! (BUT 500 pages geez)

New Books

(So I tried organizing by release date AND page count and it did not work oops. But that’s okay!!)

Lord of the Shadows by Cassandra Clare (700 pages)

I ADORE SHADOWHUNTERS.
I ADORE LADY MIDNIGHT.

I STILL HAVEN’T READ THIS BOOK.

I know, I’m insane.

But guyssss everyone says this book is amazing and there’s a cliffhanger and I’m scared okay!!! I need my children to be okay!!

Illuminae by Amie Kaufman & Jay Kristoff (600 pages)

Also if I read it I also have to read Gemina, which is 660 pages (!!!!) and the upcoming Obsidio which is reportedly 624 pages….

I give y’all permission to screech at me to read the series!!

And I will!

Someday!!

Maybe!!

Strange the Dreamer by Laini Taylor (536 pages)

It’s staring me down from my shelf but gosh darnit it’s long. And it’s Laini Taylor!! Which means the writing will be beautiful but also very descriptive and hard to get into at first hahahah hence me still not having read it oops.

Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyemi (525 pages)

OKAY. I KNOW I’m going to love this book!! The hype is NOT going to be wrong with this one, I just know it.

Buuuuut I still haven’t read it.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

And I Darken by Kiersten White (475 pages)

I was planning on listening to this on audiobook from Overdrive but I can’t focus as well in audiobook?? So I’m going to read the physical book and I’m so excited for Lada (is that her name) and Radu?? and all that murder and stuff…

except I’m apparently not ready enough to read it!! Surprise!!

The Belles by Dhonielle Clayton (450 pages)

Okay so this is on the smaller side of the big scale, but the HYPE. Omg. So huge. And 450 pages is still a rather large commitment?? Also there’s some certain content issues I heard of that makes me avoid it a bit more but I might end up reading it?

slightly spoilery/content warning

I’m a bit more hesitant because of the “bury your gays” trope I heard about in this, but also W/POC rep is so important and I think this book is still worth reading? I’m just so saddened by the bury your gays trope because I thought we would’ve been past that? But I do want to read this and basically I’m a contradictory mess hahahah oops

What popular and/or large books have you been avoiding? Do you avoid large books? Are any of these books still on your TBR as well? What is your preferred length for a book? Which of these books must I *ABSOLUTELY* read?

How to make a book blogger’s day! // BECOME THE SUN.

Alas, it is difficult to BE the sun.

There’s the small details such as you might, I don’t know, BURN, oh and that we’re humans and it’s impossible to physically be a sun?? (I mean, you could glue neon lights to yourself and blind others, that’s pretty similar. Oh, and wear a heater too.)

BUT. Theoretically, you could be a sun by lighting up someone’s day (wow so cheesy oopsies)! Specifically, a blogger’s day!

See, we all know bloggers and book bloggers are fabulous! And who doesn’t want to make someone happier? Spread joy! Spread happiness! (My only wish is that the rest of the world follow this mantra toooooo honestly if the world was as lovely as the book blogging community, it would be a wonderful thing. *cries because the world isn’t*)

Tis a simple thing, to shower someone’s day with happiness!! BE THE SUN. Theoretically. Here are some things that make my day as a blogger!

1. Tell them you love their blog design!

I mean, duh? Book blogger who pours time and effort into blog to make it nice for people + Person who acknowledges time and effort spent on blog by saying it’s nice* = Happy book blogger!!

Obviously, you should mean your compliment too! Don’t give out empty compliments! And honestly, the book blogs out there are so fabulous, it shouldn’t be hard to be sincere.

Me @ all the pretty blogs (and books, obviously) out there

I’m telling you, from experience, it just means SO MUCH, and I’m not just saying that! Literally reading each and every comment makes me so happy, but ones that tell me they love my blog/blog design has me squealing incoherently while my sister tells me to shut up overjoyed?! (THANK YOU to all of those who’ve said something like this before *cries because I don’t deserve such wonderful followers*)

*Or any other flattering adjective. Obviously.

2. Follow their blog!

I’m not going to commence on the whole value of followers and whatnot, but if you like a person’s blog and want to read their posts, give them a follow! Of course, there’s the whole thing about inactive followers who don’t actually ever visit your blog except when it’s a full moon*

BUUUUT all the same, it’s nice to see those numbers!! Like, “ooh my blog is actually reaching more people other than my dog and fellow minions**??? #win

It’s pretty simple, really. Like blog = follow blog = insecure blogger who feels validated and happy because we* are LIKE THAT.

*WHEREWOLF??? I mean werewolf. Not ‘where is the wolf’ abbreviated. (I used to think I was funny??? Somebody help me.)
**AND YOU GUYS TOO. Reading this post. Ahem.
*Did I say we? Okay fine, I meant ME. SHHH.

3. Tell them you read and loved a book they recommended

The amount of happiness I get from a friend/blogger reading a book I recommended is UNREAL. Oh my gosh.

It is one of the best feelings ever??!

Because then I get an excuse to fangirl all over again and also I get super happy knowing they listened to my recommendation?? LIKE WOW I’m apparently trustworthy? :))) MORE VALIDATION. And happiness.

I also feel super guilty if someone reads a book I recommended and DIDN’T like it but thankfully that hasn’t happened often…but I’m always super paranoid about that what if?? WHAT IF my recommendation wasted their time and they secretly hate me?? WHAT IF they didn’t love it as much as I did???

RELIEVE THESE WORRIES. Tell that blogger you loved that book!! They will for sure be happy to fangirl with you and give you tissues or cake if needed and who doesn’t want that?

4. Leave a [thoughtful/passionate/another adjective] comment!

Don’t get me wrong, I appreciate and cherish and coddle and feed grapes* to every comment I get but I ADORE and feed chocolate** to the wonderful people who leave a super nice comment???

LIKE THANKS PAL FOR BEING A KIND HUMAN.

Honestly, there is nothing I love more than opening my notifications and seeing a comment from someone who enjoyed my post and is just super sweet and/or passionate or just took the time to write something NICE. *squeals into pillow uncontrollably*

What did I do to deserve you?????? Can I just squeal and hug you and give you chocolate please okay thanks i love you ok bye ❤

*Pff, comments don’t mean that much to me?? Also I have a bowl of grapes besides me okay.
**Chocolate > grapes. ICYMI.

(I’m making too many footnotes and I NEED TO STOP.)

5. Fangirl with them about a favourite book

Let me just tell you the three biggest things you need to know about a book blogger:

  • We love books
  • We fangirl about said books as easily as WE BREATHE.
  • And duh, we LOVE FANGIRLING.
  • (Yes, I’m referring to myself again with the we, but you all know this applies to you too??)

WHICH MEANS!! If you ever see a blogger mention your favourite book, or if you’re stuck on what to say, fangirl with them!!

You guys can become like these two minions and duh, they’re #goals??

Okay, but really. I LOVE finding someone else who loved the same book as me and considering the amount of book bloggers I know who started this blog as a way to share their love of books with other people??? THEY WILL LOVE IT TOO.

6. Share their posts

Of course, you don’t have to do this AT ALL!! (Which applies to this whole list, really.)

But if you enjoyed a post, sharing that post (via a pingback in a blog post, in a wrap-up post, Twitter, reblog, anything you’d like) is such a nice gesture??? So many bloggers put SO MUCH time into their posts and having them shared is just such a lovely feeling. (VALIDATION. AGAIN. I swear I’m not this insecure all the time. xD)

7. Give them chocolate/cake/food.

I just spelled food backwards on Google and searched DOOF.

I SWEAR I DID WELL IN ENGLISH.

:)))

But just look:

Anyone remember this gif?? ;)))

I’m only partly joking for this one?? Give blogger food = Happy blogger!!

I mean it’s FOOD. 10/10 will make someone’s day AWESOME and 120% better.

8. Pat their heads and offer comfort in their bookish times of need!

Let me define times of need: a) they have finished Crooked Kingdom or They Both Die at the End or a Heartbreaking Book and are DYING OF SADNESS AND THE FEELS, b) they have NO BOOKS* to read, or c) they have run out of chocolate/ice cream/food and are screaming in pain!!

BECOME THEIR SUNSHINE! Ahem:

a) show them adorable pictures of cats/dogs/favourite animal or FOOD and shove the most cutesy contemporary book you can find at them
b) give them more FOOD and leave piles of your favourite books at their doorstep
c) run before they beg you for your chocolate and you are left screaming in pain** (JUST KIDDING :))) Mostly.)

*Don’t you even try to point out their bookshelf or TBR
**Yes, I just told you to give them food for a) and b) and now am telling you to run away with your food. Your point is…

AHH I hope I helped BRIGHTEN your day??! (*wink wink*) I am in no way trying to dictate what you should do haha, I just wanted to make a fun post about some of the things that have made MY day and give you all a sort of huge imaginary hug??!? There’s no special occasion, no nothing, but I was just overwhelmed with how AMAZING this community is. Honestly, you guys have the whole “being the sun” thing down. 😉

But now you tell me: what are the things that have made YOUR day, as a blogger? Do we have any of these in common? Isn’t the community just the best? CAN I GIVE YOU A HUG? AND ISN’T THAT COOKIE GIF AMAZING???

Much love (and sunshine*)!!! ❤
*Except not literally because I have an aversion to direct sunlight okay anyway byeeee!

2017 September Book Releases // LOOK AT ALL THE BOOKS *dies*

It’s almost September!! (HOW?)

I’m not sure how I feel about this fact?

I’m SO EXCITED because there are so many anticipated books this month (*cough They Both Die at the End* *cough Warcross*) and also WONDER WOMAN has finally released (!!!!!!) but also DISGRUNTLED because summer is over and I shall be robbed of any semblance of a life. *cries*

But before that, I’ll be robbed of my money, of course! Shh I’m not handing it over willingly, what are you talking about? I am SO excited for this month’s releases!

Oh, and yes, you can prepare for your TBRs to grow larger! *cackles* Let’s gooooo destroy your conquering-TBR goal and admire the pretty covers!

September 5th

They Both Die at the End by Adam Silvera: AHHHHH pff no biggie, it’s only one of my most anticipated books of the year???!?!? Adam Silvera has shot to being one of my most favourite authors and his books are just so hEaRtBrEaKiNg and I love them!!! ❤

I AM READY. (Narrator: She was not ready.)

If There’s No Tomorrow by Jennifer L. Armentrout: Main character has everything planned out for senior year and is super pumped until -GASP- something horrible happens!! Now nothing’s the same!! It never is.

(Do I become more salty at the end of the month or what?) As cliche as I made it sound, I really am looking forward to this one!!

Godsgrave by Jay Kristoff (Nevernight #2): Have I read Nevernight? NOPE. #oops *goes to Goodreads* *reads word “assassin”* *rushes off to find Nevernight from the depths of my physical TBR*

I swear I’ve been meaning to read this one!! There’s so much hype surrounding the first book! I hope the sequel proves to be just as good?

Girls Made of Snow and Glass by Melissa Bashardoust: This one’s a retelling pitched as Frozen meets The Bloody Chamber! Talk about an interesting pairing?? (I mean, I suppose Elsa can be super intense and all… but wait what about Olaf??? THE BLOODY CHAMBER. Yikes. But also *grabby hands* Sorry, Olaf.)

Tower of Dawn by Sarah J. Maas (Throne of Glass #6): Okay, so I haven’t read the 5th book, Empire of Storms?? Apparently this is Chaol’s book, and it sounds good!! (I’m lowkey grumbling though because this series is taking so long to be completed and my brain can’t remember what I ate for dinner last night, let alone the content of the past books I read a year ago??? #halp)

A Semi-Definitive List of Worst Nightmares by Krystal Sutherland: I’ve only read a few reviews on this one, but from what I’ve read this book is AMAZING and I absolutely can’t wait to read it!! This girl has a bunch of fears because her family is ‘cursed’ (at least I think that’s it???) and then she tries to overcome those and yeah.

…Okay I swear the book is probably more interesting that I make it sound!!

Genuine Fraud by E. Lockhart: I haven’t read any of E. Lockhart’s books (such as the uber-hyped We Were Liars) yet but I’ve heard some good things about this one!! What’s with all the blond hair tho???

The Thing with Feathers by McCall Hoyle: The thing with feathers is that they’re FLUFFY and soft and can be found on birds or at Dollarama I was going to write off this book as simply being a book with pretty font and feathers, but I’ve never read a book with a main character with epilepsy, like this one and I’m hoping it’s good??!

Right Where You Left Me by Calla Devlin: Family drama! Missing journalist father?? FBI and earthquakes? I think?? (I’M TRYING HERE, OKAY.)

Light Years by Emily Ziff Griffin: This girl has this super rare condition and also has this SUPER PLAN to ‘start her life’ and be ‘free from her mother’!!

BUT.

Then there’s a deadly virus and her father is quarantined! *GASP* But when the girl (Luisa) gets a CRYPTIC message from a stranger who can stop the virus, she knows she has to something to save her family (and the world, obvi). Go Lu!! Wouldn’t it be the job of the stranger to do that tho??

Even the Darkest Stars by Heather Fawcett: I feel like so many of the blurbs these days are all SO SIMILAR. Especially with how they end?? But they sound GOOD, so I guess that’s why? xD I’m getting some bonding sister vibes, but also sister competition! And climbing a mountain or something? All the good stuff.

Black Bird of the Gallows by Meg Kassel: I’m going to be real here, I desperately needed another book to complete this gallery and so I found this one but this doesn’t seem like one I’m going to pick up? It seems quite cliche with the whole falling in love with a “inhuman, tall, brooding ‘harbringer of death'” thing going on.

September 7th

Moonrise by Sarah Crossan: Okay, the blurb I saw on GR was totally not a blurb and I have ZERO CLUE what this is about but I liked her other book, One, so I’m giving this the On-the-tbr-but-idk-when-I-will-read-it-possibly-never treatment!!

A Jigsaw of Fire and Stars by Yaba Badoe: 4 words: MAGICAL. REALISM. + Pretty cover!!

The Loneliest Girl in the Universe by Lauren James: Can you fall in love with someone you’ve never met, never even spoken to – someone who is light years away? UM NO. But okay, book, go ahead and delude yourself!!

I swear I’m not this cynical in real life.

I think.

September 12th

Warcross by Marie Lu: ANOTHER MOST ANTICIPATED AHHHHH!!! From what I understand with my tiny brain, this is like a virtual reality world?? Or at least there are video game vibes? And everyone seems to be loving it AND IT’S MARIE LU I mean come on.

September 12th whyyyyyyyy :'(((( *cries* *grabby hands*

Before She Ignites by Jodi Meadows (Fallen Isles Trilogy #1): Mira originally came accross as a special snowflake (so over those) BUT THEN. She has anxiety?? And there seems to be dragons??? GIVE ME NOW.

Fireblood by Elly Blake (Frostblood Saga #2): I haven’t read the first book but apparently these books are super good!! Plus there’s blood and blood is good hahahaha I’m okay guys I swear. (*everyone runs away from me*)

You Bring the Distant Near by Mitali Perkins: I don’t know how I could do that, BUT THANKS PAL. I’m glad you think so.

No, but in all seriousness (ew, serious) this book is #ownvoices with an Indian-American MC!! Explores “sisterhood, first loves, friendship, and inheritance of culture” YOU GUYS. I need this in my lifeeeee!

September 19th

A Poison Dark and Drowning by Jessica Cluess (Kingdom on Fire #2): POISON YAY. That always makes things interesting. (I swear I’m a very harmless person!!) Haven’t read the first book (as seems to be a trend in this post) but this series sounds so good!! And I kind of love the covers. So.

One Dark Throne by Kendare Blake (Three Dark Crowns #2): Guess what I’m about to say… Yup, I haven’t read the first book of this series either!! BUT I’M ALL FOR DARKNESS. And bloodthirsty royals.

Moxie by Jennifer Mathieu: Am I the only one who thinks of Moxie’s Grill & Bar?? I’ve never even had food there but oh well. I JUST LIKE FOOD and this reminds me of food?? But okay, this book actually sounds SO GOOD! MC (Moxie’s Grill) starts a feminist revolution at her high school??! Sign me upppp.

Jane, Unlimited by Kristin Cashore: Kristin Cashore!! Am I the only one who read and really liked her Graceling books?? This one’s a totally different vibe, more a coming-of-age contemporary story than fantasy, but I can’t wait!!

September 26th

The Language of Thorns by Leigh Bardugo: LEIGH BARDUGOOOOOO!! I’m still fawning over the fact that Wonder Woman has finally released AND THEN BAM.

Another book, and it’s set in the Grishaverse!! #blessed (Hi here’s your daily reminder to read Six of Crows and Crooked Kingdom even if this book isn’t related to those books directly)

Invictus by Ryan Graudin: Time-traveling!!! I feel like a lot of time-traveling books follow the same formula (ppl go back in time + screw things up = ultimate death unless they find a miracle to fix things)

BUT this is RYAN GRAUDIN!! I love, love, LOVED, her previous books (Wolf by Wolf duology – reimagining of Hitler-era with shape-shifting, and The Walled City which was inspired off true events) and I knowwwww* I will love this!!

*Okay, fine, strongly hope? I’m a cynical melon, remember?

Starfish by Akemi Dawn Bowman: Another character with a “mother-that-makes-her-feel-unremarkabke”!! (So much hate against mothers, jeez.) Who is certain that once she escapes into her dream school Everything Will Be Better. BUT GASP. She doesn’t make it into said art school!! And then some other things happen. :)))

Seriously, I swear these books are a TON better than how I make them sound!! EDIT: Also there’s Asian rep in this one!! #yesplease

Someone needs to stop me from making these posts.

Is September packed with incredible reads or what??? (I’m telling you, don’t listen to my cheesy generic descriptions of the books. xD) All of the good books are ruining my “I dislike September because of school” aesthetic though #help What books are you most excited for?? (WARCROSS, TBDATE, Language of Thorns, mm yes good choices.) Have I grown your TBR? (Mwa hahaha)  Will you give me your money so I can buy all these books?

GIVE ME YOUR COMMENTS TO SNACK* ON. :))) Sending lots of love and I hope you’re having a beautiful time wherever your are!! ❤

*See what I did there? Snack… Book Snacks?? *waggles eyebrows* Okay I’ll stop

Reasons why book bloggers would write the best books ever!

Fact: book bloggers are pretty amazing. They’re so smart, they’re so BOOKISH, they’re so friendly (ily people <3), they’re so aware and fabulous. Like, seriously. All of you book bloggers, YOU ROCK. I admire all of you so much, you have no idea!

Writers, you see, are also some people who I admire! They provide us with the AMAZING books that I would honestly be lost without. That I adore to read. That are fabulously written. SO. Just imagine the potential, then, if you mash the two together and have a writer who’s also a book blogger?! I KNOW. GENIUS.

This is partly inspired by the fact that there are so many book bloggers I’ve met and talk to (and many who I haven’t) who are aspiring writers and such? (So my genius idea and dream to have writers who are book bloggers publish books might not be too far off??! I AM PSYCHIC.)

And in case you had any doubts of the amazingness of book bloggers and their talents, well, here are reasons why book bloggers would write the best books ever!! (Talk to me after you’ve read the post, muggle who doubts the awesomeness of book blogging writers. Also seriously, they have some of the best ideas and I would 10/10 read books by book bloggers. #publisherstakenoteplz)

Oh and disclaimer I’m not trying to undermine authors at all!! In case you read any comment in that way, I’m proving why book bloggers would write amazing books, not that they are better than the authors we have or that the authors we have aren’t good! 🙂Read More »

Blogging disappointments: Unsuccessful blog posts! // SAD FACE.

Disclaimer: There are many positive things about blogging! Books! Friends! BOOKS!

YET.

Life is not full of positives always??? (I know, it’s an injustice.) And sometimes, we face disappointments which also applies to blogging (obviously or I would not be writing this post). There are a few I can think of but what I wanted to focus on for today’s post is unsuccessful blog posts!! (No duh Analee, go ahead and ignore the title again why don’t you??)

Reasons why there should be more YA books set in Canada (Where are thou Canadian authors??)

HAPPY CANADA DAY TO ALL MY CANADIAN FOLK OUT THERE! ❤ ❤ I have been SO EXCITED for this day to come, from a blogging perspective because I’ve wanted to talk about the lack of books set in Canada for a while now and had written this post in advance (I HOPE YOU LIKE IT) and from a literal perspective because it’s Canada’s 150th celebration this year and there is going to be so much fun today and AHHHHHH. *squeals* *starts singing O Canada in the bilingual English & French version because I’m Canadian like that*

Fun fact: I’d learned the bilingual version since preschool because I live in Ottawa and was in french immersion the majority of my school life, and I’m still not 100% confident singing the anthem in English. o.O OOPS.

So, in honour of Canada Day I decided to have a more Canada themed post for today!! Because it feels like Canada is always sooooo overlooked in real life, sure, but also IN YA BOOKS. I mean, name more than one or two young adult books that are set in Canada?? Exactly. And not just set by name, but actually shows that it’s in Canada, not just says that so and so lives in _____, Canada. You know? There are soooooo many books set in the States, and I don’t mind, I just want more books in Canada because, hey! We exist and we’re kind of fabulous too (if I do say so myself) and having books set in Canada would be the BEST. Agh.

(Oh and!! Last reminder to enter my giveaway to win one released 2017 diverse book! It ends July 3rd, on Monday, and I’ll be contacting the winner on the 4th. 🙂 )Read More »

How important are followers and comments to being a ‘successful’ blogger?

Thought of the day: It’s hot today and I really really want ice cream.

Hiiii everyone!! How are you all today? Today I’m here with a blogging discussion, because it’s been SO LONG since I last did one and they’re so much fun to write! (Though half the time I have no idea what I’m writing, but shh. Minor details.)

So, I was glancing at my stats the other day, and I’m almost at 1000 WordPress followers?! I’m currently at 998, without counting my email followers. And gosh, I’m just so surprised and shocked and so THANKFUL, above all, that there are actual people out there who read (and sometimes even enjoy?? I hope???) my insaneeee sleep-deprived rambles omg haha. ❤

Which brings me to this post! I’m planning a follower-themed appreciation post when I hit 1000 (and possibly a giveaway? POSSIBLY. I am a poor broke bookworm, but fingers crossed!!) but for now I’m going to just share some of the thoughts I’ve had on blog followers and being a ‘successful’ blogger!! LET’S GO.Read More »

7 things all readers wish they’d known before becoming a bookworm // But nobody told them (#rude)

Yeah, so the ‘they’ and ‘them’ I’m referencing in the title? TOTALLY NOT TALKING ABOUT ME. Nope.

Hello everyone!! I hope you guys are all doing well! ❤ I’ve kind of been MIA lately since my last post, but I’m back today with another post for you guys–another list (can you tell I love them?) but this time the focus is on us bookworms!

Revelation you are maybe not aware of but kind of true: Becoming a bookworm is not really choice? It just decides to attack you suddenly after you realize, hey, I like books! Let me read more of them! And there you go. But like, there’s those moments you’re sitting there and you wish there was some sort of manual letting you know what you were getting yourself into because being a bookworm is dangerous and full of pain? (No? Just me? Okay.) Well, here’s that manual you never asked for or thought you needed!!Read More »

Publishing conspiracy theories // Basically I rant for a very long time

I’m backkkkkk! It hasn’t been 2 weeks this time haha. This week has been busy which is why I didn’t get up any posts in between my last one but the weekend is here, at least?? (But it’s leaving so quickly whyyyyyy.) I did read 2 books though!!* So that’s good. And I hope you guys are doing well!

*(The Love Interest, which was entertaining but ultimately disappointing *sad face* & Flame in the Mist which was THE BEST THING EVER. Ahem. I did like TWATD better tbh but it was still really really good. Debating over a review?? I will basically just bribe tell you to read it so I don’t know. I have no clue what to read now though? HELP. Save me and give me recs for outstanding books, people.)

So, on to the topic of this post, which may have some/most of you theoretically scratching your head in questioning?? I swear this will make sense. Or I hope it will. Because I’m kind of writing this at 1 AM in the morning and I may be completely senseless?

Publishers, you see, are marvelous creatures. They are, second only to the authors and the crew of people helping them with their book (thank you, acknowledgements for drilling into my head a book is not made by only one person), greatly responsible for giving us bookworms the books we read soooooo. As book collectors, or even just people who eye books in the bookstore (very oddly put, but oh well) there are certain pet peeves that pretty much every bookworm can relate to, and it all comes down to the PUBLISHER. And this happens so often, with so many different publishers, in my humble opinion, publishers are TOTALLY are conspiring against us………….. right, guys?

WARNING: Fair amount of ranting and complaining and crying in this post!! Maybe it’s the lack of sleep… or hunger? Brb, let me get a snack.

1. Changing formats mid-series/after series completion

Okay. The snack did nothing. /START RANT/ This doesn’t even make sense! Yes, I get making money and whatever reasoning there is behind this (actually I do not because I am a sleep deprived raging bookworm but shh) but if you start with releasing the first book in a series, say, in paperback and then second or third book comes along and you SWITCH TO HARDCOVER. And don’t offer the option for paperback either?? Sure, hardcovers cost more but then use hardcover from the start, don’t just change midway when poor, broke bookworms (ME) are spending money on those paperbacks only to have the second/third/whatever book be in hardcover/paperback and NOT MATCH the size of the first book.

This happened with SO MANY SERIES it’s not even funny. Agh. I just want my books to match in height and format, is that so much to ask???

I had the first three books of the Selection series in paperback (it was a special deal, or else I would’ve preferred hardcover haha) and then the next two were released and they were in hardcover *cries*
I KNOW. I was heartbroken. I got the first book, The Lost Hero as a gift in paperback… You guess what happened when the next books were released… YET. I did buy a hardcover version of The Lost Hero so there’s that (yes I’m that extra) BUT MY MONEYYYYY.

I warned you!! Salty.

2. Changing covers mid-series/after series completion.

And the horror continues!!! For series I really love, okay, fine, if I like the new covers better I will buy the new set if I happen to have money. (my money thooooooo could’ve been spent on new books?!) BUT. Here I am, minding my own business and consuming addictive books that the publishers release, and then BAM. Cover change. If it’s mid-series especially, aghhhhhhhhh. I have the first book in a certain style and I LIKE IT. Okay? So when the second book comes along, do not, for all bookworms’ sake, do not decide to give it a makeover pleaseeeeeeee. Because I really really want to read the book and now here you are making it impossible for me by making sure my covers don’t match????? WHY.

A horrible, horrible circumstance includes (Only one because if I do more I will rage):

The first one is obviously better!! I own that one, so obviously.

You go, but Analee, there’s the sequel’s cover that matches the first one! YET. I actually don’t get that one because in the US/Canada it’s the second cover?? I KNOW. I have the first book in the original cover and there they go changing the covers mid series without even letting me have the sequel cover I wanttttt. I still have not read the sequel. I loved the first one, might I add.

Oh, and don’t even get me started on the situations where the cover AND format is changed. I just GIVE UP.

3. Misleading synopsis

/END RANT, START COMPLAINING/ Okay, so not all publishers do this but some books do have misleading synopses! Obviously this is a conspiracy to make sure the readers have high expectations for something and so they read the book only to find that something is nonexistent or hardly there??? #rude Teeny tiny detail though? I actually can’t think of any books I’ve personally read off the top of my head where this happened (BUT IT DID I KNOW IT), however there have been other people who’ve read books and claimed this? SO. I am indignant on their behalf!! And honestly it’s just so inconsiderate. A marketing ploy that does work, occasionally! But so inconsiderate to the people looking forward to something and then just being let down. Why are publishers conspiring against usssssss??

4. Making sure books have pretty covers so I never complete my TBR.

Before, I used to struggle with the pain of dealing with unappealing cover. Shallow? Perhaps. A bad thing? Not really. Yet, nowadays, there are SO MANY pretty covers. From most publishers! Coincidence? I THINK NOT.

These books all have SUCH BEAUTIFUL covers and they don’t follow a theme at all haha my taste is all over the place but I wanted to showcase a few of the different types of covers I’ve seen and aghhhhh there are so many amazing covers out there!!! I chose these ones especially because they were all books I first added to my TBR because of their covers… I SENSE A CONSPIRACY. They’re all published from different publishers too (I think!) And there are many moreeeee which obviously shows the publishers’ conspiracy to make sure I never finish my TBR??? Or that I am way to happy to add a book to my TBR because of the cover.

If you now have the urge to add these to your TBR or want to read more about it, here you go BECAUSE I AM HELPFUL and also conspiring to make your TBR largerForest of a Thousand Lanterns by Julie Dao \\ Cold Summer by Gwen Cole \\ The Color Project by Sierra Abrams \\ The Glass Spare by Lauren DeStefano \\ The Sun is Also a Star by Nicola Yoon

5. Releasing sequels ten thousand years after the first.

NOT AN EXAGGERATION WHATSOEVER. Nope. I suppose most sequels are released after a year? (Though the book after Lord of Shadows will be released in 2019. IN TWO YEARS. RIP my soul *sobs*) But when you have books in a series, and the first/second/whichever book ends on a cliffhanger and the next book isn’t released yet????? IT BRINGS PAIN. So yes, a year-long wait is the equivalent of ten thousand years when you need the next book and it’s not released yet. *cries* Why are they making us suffer??

I haven’t read Lord of Shadows (but I waited SO LONG for this too!!) but like I said, the third book releases 2 YEARS from now like WHY? (I understand that Cassandra Clare will be releasing the first book in TLH trilogy next year but stilllllll my need for the third book for TDA doesn’t disappear??)

I recently finished Flame in the Mist and I loved it and I want moreeeee but it just released this month meaning I am going to have to wait forever for the next one!! I WANT TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENS. This happened with The Wrath and the Dawn, too and I am displeased. *grumbles*

Funny story for Crystal Storm! (Not so funny, actually) I read up to the fourth book, uhhh I forget the name, but yeah, the 4th book of the Falling Kingdoms series, and I just ended up waiting SO LONG for this one, that I just… um.. am not interested in this anymore?? Tragic, I know!! I do plan on picking it up but definitely not until the whole series is finished. *sighs*

Ahhhh the wait for A Court of Wings and Ruin has been sooo long!! I loved the second book so much and I NEED THIS. But the wait was torturous and now also a) I don’t remember what happened in the first two very well and b) I am scared to read it because emotions????

6. Hyped books being released all in the same month

It’s not just me who noticed the everflowing abundance of books being released each month right?? And also some months just perfectly coordinate allllll the hyped books in the same month. (AHEM May I’m looking at you.) Which leads to me going broke. AGAIN. Seeing how it’s most likely the publishers who set the release date?? CONSPIRACIES. Also, with the end of May and the start of June coming as well, we all know one person who’s going to be spending their money this month. Someone should ban me from the bookstores. (NO PLEASE DON’T.)

JUST LOOK at the books released in May like oh my gosh. (When Dimple Met Rishi is still not released though and I want to read it so muchhhhhh!!) I can’t wait for The Crown’s Fate and The Names They Gave Usthey both sound so good. I actually read The Love Interest though, and it was kind of disappointing but I was totally looking forward to it! But now I am broke and I WANT ALL THE JUNE BOOKS TOO. *cries*

7. Putting extra blank pages at the end of a book

NO. NO. NO. That moment you’re finishing a book and reach the final few pages and you’re all excited and scared and feeling all the emotions and you turn to the next page and…

[Empty page

…]

IT’S HORRIBLE. Utterly horrible, I tell you.

Aaaaaaand on that positive note, there we have it! *breathes* WOW that took so much energy haha I was very passionately furiously typing for a while there… Anywho, to get back to the more positive way of things momentarily before I ask you to share negativity with me!! I DO LOVE PUBLISHERS. I am forever grateful that they make the amazing books I read possible to be shared with me, and so many others. They just… are incredibly frustrating but I’m sure there are many factors that play into their conspiracy interesting decisions! Do publishers hold a conspiracy against us??? YOU MAY NEVER KNOW. So.

I hope you enjoyed that very long rant/complaining session of mine!! It was a long time coming, I think haha. But it had to be said! All of these little peeves are so torturous to my smol soul. But I must know: I cannot be the only one to feel the effects of this horrid possible conspiracy??? Which of these bother you the most? Let me know in the comments! ❤ I hope you guys are having a great day. 🙂

The ups and downs of blogging // 2 years blogiversary + birthday!!

Failed moment of the day: I literally spelled my blog title “Book Snakes” in an email and did not realize it for the longest time ever. Oops. (But it kind of sounds good? Is that just me…)

Hello everyone!! Ignore the above. 🙂 I meant to post this yesterday, but I got kind of caught up with things and didn’t get the chance, unfortunately. By things, I mean I turned 19 yesterday??? And it’s my 2 year-blogiversary?? It honestly doesn’t feel any different but somehow I’m older? But like I’m still not down with this whole adulting thing… #helpwhereismychildhood

This isn’t going to be a me-focused post, but a mini timeline:

I started my blog on March 20-something (let’s go with 24th because it’s around the time I started posting more often + saves me from mixing up dates), 2015. I have since then:

  • Survived high school (?!)
  • Started university (SO MUCH WORK but I suppose it’s an accomplishment haha)
  • Continued part-time work (aka I have even less time)
  • Bought too many books
  • Went to Disney World + Universal Studios (HARRY POTTER omg I CAN’TTTTT) and literally had the best time ever
  • Seriously though you can’t imagine how amazing it was.
  • I’m actually in love with Butterbeer and I even got a stuffed Hedwig I love herrrrr
  • I know I never even mentioned this until now?? lol. But I went during the week of Christmas (SO BUSY my god) and it was basically my dream come true in HP World. I adore roller coasters so much and it was heaven.
  • Written 435 posts (including this one)
  • Procrastinated on too many things

Can you believe it’s also been 2 YEARS since I started this blog??? My. mind. can’t. process. this. HOW has it been so long??? (Well, long for me, anyway, seeing how I never thought this would last this much time.) Granted, I didn’t blog for 7 months during this time, which is probably why it doesn’t really feel like 2 years, but nonetheless, it’s been 2 years since I started the blog! I wanted to take a moment to thank you guys, first of all, for sticking through my rambling inconsistent nonsense (who would have thought???), and secondly, for making this whole blogging thing SO WORTHWHILE. ❤ ❤

BUT. Blogging is HARD. I don’t think I’ve ever talked about particularly the things that are difficult, so here we go!

What I struggled with

Finding the time to blog

This is actually something I still struggle with, honestly. What is time and how do we have enough of it to do the 19876 things in our lives??? Someone please offer the answer, because I have no clue. When I first started, I tried to post everyday, and for a few months at a time, it worked. But my quality of posts were not as good, and I ended up giving up on the daily posts thing because life just gets SO BUSY. I occasionally prepare my posts in advance now, but other times, even that proves to be challenging. The posts alone can take so much of my time, it takes at least an hour for most posts, depending on the type… but then you add in making graphics, commenting, and all other blogging things… LIKE I SAID. No time. *cry face*

Writing blog posts

Finding the inspiration and idea to write a blog post–a creative, and interesting one–was actually much harder than I’d expected?? Am I the only one who thinks this?? I love writing discussions, for one, but coming up with a topic?? Can be so hard. Sometimes I’m totally struck by inspiration and it can be easy, but other times I try (and fail) to writing something semi-coherent and enjoyable to read haha. I’ve had to resign myself to this fact: there are very few ‘original’ topics. Most things (such as this pros and cons of blogging, if you will) have already been written about. But, as I learned, it’s your own take on it that makes it an interesting post! But that is hard when the topic just isn’t coming to you… *glares at past blogging slumps* Very familiar with that, unfortunately.

Blog hopping & commenting

I adore blog hopping and commenting on other blogs!! It’s so much fun and I always love hearing from other bloggers–that interaction is what makes blogging so special, right? What I struggle with is again, time. Time, to not only reply to comments on my own blog, but also leave a comment on the commenter’s blog, and then go blog-hop on and comments on other blogs. I try my best, but sometimes I get behind on my commenting game, and reply to comments a bit late–and then also spend double the amount of time binge-blog hopping and catching up on posts I’ve missed. It’s just so time-consuming though, and I feel so bad that I can’t make it to every blog ahah. If I haven’t stopped by your blog in a while, I promise, I’m trying! 🙂

Getting caught up in the stats

I didn’t expect much when I first started blogging in terms of stats (i.e. followers, likes, comments, etc.) but I think after two years there are things I’ve come to expect from my blog, and I won’t lie, stats kind of really impacted my blogging experience in a negative way sometimes. As a human being, as a perfectionist-in-certain-areas person in particular, being ‘successful’ (in quotations because everyone has different definitions) is kind of a goal. And blogging takes so much work, and effort, that getting, say, lots of views, or lots of comments on your posts feels good, and when you don’t, it can lead, inevitably, to disappointment, which can lead later to a lack of motivation to blog. The easiest thing, I’ve learned, is to not care about the stats as much, but that’s easier said than done. It’s perfectly fine to care about the stats, just need to find that balance so that it doesn’t start to bring you down.

Comparing myself to other bloggers

Is it just me who has looked at other bloggers before “Their blog is so [successful/popular/creative/eye-catching/insert attribute here]” and subconsciously compared it to my own? There are SO MANY absolutely amazing blogs out there that 100% deserve all the praises, and I would be the first one to gush over the many fabulous qualities. I think it’s great to show that support, those bloggers deserve it so much! But then, comes in the creeping thought of “Is mine not good enough?” or “Why isn’t mine as successful?” and that’s when it gets difficult. I’ve been through it. Let me say this: YOUR BLOG IS GREAT, PEOPLE. I truly mean it. Stats, everything, doesn’t matter if you’re happy with your blog. It’s perfectly fine to love other blogs (you totally should!!) but take a moment to just appreciate your blog as well instead of comparing it because that will make you so much happier. ❤ #lessonlearned xD

What makes it all so worth it:

The blogging community

#1 reason, hands down!! My praises for the blogging community are literally endless. The limitless amount of kind, caring and such amazing people that I’ve met during my blogging years make me ask why aren’t people around the world more like them?? Legit, if the world was as lovely as the blogging community, we’d have world peace and so much more love!! ❤ ❤ Even better is the fact that through the blogging community, I’ve gotten the chance to meet and learn, about so many people, so many things, and of course, new books. It feels so great to know that whenever I have a book I adore (or a book I despise), there will ALWAYS be someone there to either fangirl or rant with me. That sense of belonging, got lost to me a few times over my blogging journey (7 months disappearing kind of does that…) but blogging again re-introduced me to the magic that I fell in love with; There is no better feeling than fangirling with another fellow human, a friend who understands you. And I know I’m verging on cheesiness-overload (if I’m not already swimming in it), but I really mean that! The amount of friends I’ve made through blogging has made all of it SO WORTH IT. All of the struggles I mentioned above? Mean nothing, at the end of the day when I think about how great all of you are. THANK YOU for being such lovely human beings. ❤ ❤

Gosh, now I’m all emotional. This is terrible for my rep, guys. Ugh. ❤

There are so many other good sides to blogging, trust me, but I’m really short on time right now and I hope this is enough aha. ❤ ❤ The blogging community is absolutely the best part though?!?

I still can’t believe it’s been 2 years.

Okay, okay, I’ll get used to it! But thank you once again, and tell me: have you gone through any of these struggles?? How long have you been blogging, and what do you love about it? (Me, obviously, but that’s a given. :P) I love talking to each and every one of you, thank you SO MUCH for just being so supportive. ❤ ❤ A million hugs to all of you!!

Blogging: Expectations vs. Reality // Wherein I get too real about the harsh truths

THE DARK TRUTHS OF BLOGGING SHALL BE REVEALED TODAY. Dun dun dunnnnnn.

Am I being a tad dramatic? Maybe. I like to think of it as preparing you for what is to come. Ahem.

Hello everyone, and I hope you guys are all enjoying your day/night/whatever time of day it is (gotta love the international aspect of blogging!).

I’m sure posts like this have been made before, but I haven’t seen many and I thought I might put my own perspective on the situation! I think almost 2 years of blogging (although I suppose the 7 months I’ve been away should be deducted) has me slightly qualified to reveal the truth behind the reality of blogging vs the expectations we (or I) have! Let’s do this.

Blogging Expectations vs Reality

Expectation #1:

“I’m going to have over 1000 followers and comments in one night, for sure! My posts are awesome.”

obviously

Reality

waiting
Waiting for followers and feedback…

Now, I don’t know about you guys, but when I first started blogging, it was way too easy to get trapped into the stats count of things. (Sometimes still is.) And the reality of it is, it is extremely rare for the stats to go sky high immediately! Having expectations such as the above will most likely not give you the results, which I learned the hard way haha. 😉 I didn’t have the exact expectation as above, but you get the idea?

Expectation #2:

“I’m going to have a perfect blogging schedule 100% of the time! I ❤ organization!”

Reality

Me trying to keep up with life and never being able to keep a proper blogging schedule...
Me trying to keep up with life and never being able to keep a proper blogging schedule…

I mean, I love organization, I swear I do! But… way too hard to keep a consistent and perfect blogging schedule ALL. THE. TIME. If you do, I swear you will find me at your feet begging you to give me your skills. As proven by my hiatuses and life in general, sometimes it’s impossible to control everything! And I’ve felt bad about leaving blogging for so long, but sometimes it’s necessary. And it’s okay. So, no, my blogging schedule was never 100% perfect, and probably never will be! And that’s okay too. 😉

Expectation #3:

“Blogging is so easy, it hardly takes any effort at all! I could do it in my sleep.”

Reality

I mean, maybe for some the above expectation *is* reality, in which case, again, I PRAISE YOU. But for most of us (I’m assuming, anyway, based on myself, haha) BLOGGING IS DIFFICULT. Lots of fun, of course! But it takes a lot of effort and dedication to run and maintain a blog, you know? Saying blogging doesn’t take effort is like saying it’s easy for me to wake up early in the morning. They’re both LIES.

Expectation #4:

“I can totally comment on all the amazing posts out there? What are you talking about, it hardly takes any time??”

Reality

If we (I) tried to keep up with commenting on all posts... also can we just appreciate this gif here?? #muppetlove
If we (I) tried to keep up with commenting on all posts… also can we just appreciate this gif here?? #muppetlove

This one still makes me sad, guys! I want so so much to be able to keep up with ALL of the great posts being posted by lovely and wonderful bloggers but it’s impossible! I love talking to other bloggers and spreading the comment love, but it actually takes a lot more time than you’d think, you know? I try to visit a bunch whenever I get the chance lately, but trying to keep up with all the posts that show up in my reader would drive me insane due to the HUGE number of them, not to mention rob me of my life haha. I do try to comment as much as I can! I love talking to you guys all. ❤

Expectation #5:

“It’s so easy to come up with new content, and my posts are so original!”

Reality

I’m not discounting the fact that there are a lot of diverse and unique material out there, but…. let’s face it, at one point, there was probably a post very similar to the one we write. It’s pretty much all been written about at some point. Sometimes it’s easy to come up with new content, sometimes not. But when it comes down to it, majority of the time, the reality is that it’s not always easy to come with new posts, or with truly original material. And that’s okay!

Okay, so this has been mostly positive expectations with a negative reality?? Let’s switch gears a bit to a more positive note for the realities, shall we? That was kind of depressing, geez.

Expectation #6:

Opposite to the “I will be so popular really fast” mentality, there is also…

“No one is going to read my posts?? I’m going to forever be stuck with 2 followers, one of which who happens to be my [mom/friend/sister/second account/whatever].”

Reality

The blogging community is huge and I promise you, as long as you interact and have good material, there will be more than a couple people interested in your blog! It’s hard to believe at first, but I guarantee it! After all, that’s exactly what I thought when I started blogging (after the realization that followers don’t come super fast) and I’ve been proven otherwise haha.

Expectation #7:

“The more experienced, “big” bloggers will probably never speak to me anyway.”

Reality

NOT TRUE. All bloggers, from my experience, no matter how long they’ve been blogging, are always welcome to chatting! Always. I haven’t met a single blogger that ignored me completely, or if I have, the number of them is so low that I can’t even recall the memory! The bloggers I have met, even the “big” bloggers (I put big in quotations because, well, it’s subjective) always manage a reply and are always super sweet. Seriously. This is the one of the biggest myths ever!

Expectation #8

“My posts have to be 100% perfect 100% of the time or else people will stop liking my posts and following me.”

Reality

Nobody’s perfect! And nobody cares if we slip up here and there. Am I right? There have been countless times where my posts have been less than great and were actually quite terrible, if I look back on them now (those archives are forbidden, guys) but it didn’t really matter? People are always so kind and it just gave me an opportunity to make my posts better for the next time.

Expectation #9:

I will never become one of those “big” bloggers! They have so many followers, oh my gosh. I’m never going to be match them.

Reality

Liessssssss! Never lose faith in your blogging abilities! I’d say not to be so occupied with stats, but it’s easier said than done sometimes. And I know how it feels to be discouraged that our blog will never be as popular as other people’s. But I mean, I never thought this blog would go past, like, 20 followers, tops? I’m not bragging, but I’ve come a long way since then and I just wanted to tell you guys, anyone who’s feeling discouraged, or just in general, don’t get discouraged. Keep blogging. Keep working. You will reach your goal! Those “big” bloggers started off at the bottom, too. And at the end of the day, it’s just a number! Don’t let it determine your value. Because you and your blog are so much more than that!

Expectation #10:

“Blogging will totally change my life.”

Reality

… You know, this is actually 100% true. In the best way possible!

Sooooo I think that wraps up the end of this post. Please comment and let me know your thoughts! Which of these do you agree with? Disagree with? Do you have any other ones to add? I’d love to know and grow my collection of blogging secrets. LOL.  I’ve also been blog hopping lately, trying to make up for my lack of participation for the past 7 months haha. Leaving a comment would make it easier for me to stop by your blog, not to mention make my day! ❤ I hope you guys enjoy your day/night. Hugs!

Until the Next Meal, Analee
