HELLO FROM THE OTHER SIDE (of the border…)

That will never get old, I’m sorry.

In case you didn’t see my post yesterday, I am back from the States and at home in Canada, and instead of writing a recap post, I decided to make it a bit more fun and making a little post about the things I found out about Americans! This is just a little non-bookish post which I thought would be a little fun to do—please don’t take anything personally.

So.. let’s get onto the things I discovered about Americans! *Claps enthusiastically*

1. Americans don’t have Tim Hortons… they have Dunkin’ Donuts??

THE HORROR. As you guys have probably just realized, I like Tim Hortons. What can I say, I’m a Canadian! (Well, I’m technically American since I was born there, but DETAILS, DETAILS. Who cares about them?) I guess I’m not that surprised that America don’t have Tim Hortons—I was mostly kind of… well, I don’t know what exactly I was, but it was mildly interesting to see how they have Dunkin’ Donuts instead, which I have never heard of in my life… LOL.

2. Americans have some not-so-correct stereotypical ideas about us Canadians…

Now, for all you Americans out there, I’m not trying to say that ALL of you have these kind of ideas! But when I went to visit my cousins in Boston and New York, let’s just say that I.. did not exactly agree with their idea of what Canadians are like. 🙂 But it was all just in fun, of course. Here are some that they told me:

-Canada is basically the North Pole.
UHHH, NOPE. (Thank god.) Yes, it can get super cold here in Canada, but we do have something called… SUMMER. The season of suns and hot weather. You know.

-Canadians pronounce ‘sorry’ differently.
Where did this come from?! Like, apparently there’s more of an emphasis of the ‘o’ in sorry when Canadians say it? I’m not sure if that made any sense, but… whatever. It’s definitely not something I’ve ever heard!

-Canadians say a-boot, not about.
Again, UHHH NOPE. At least not for the Canadians I know. Maybe for other people..?? Possibly? Improbably, but you know. I don’t know. I can say for sure though it doesn’t apply to me!

-Canadians always say ‘Eh’.
Uhh, do we?? I honestly didn’t notice this one, but.. maybe it’s true? Canadians, help me out here. Tell me, do we say ‘eh’? AHHH the struggles. The fact that I don’t know if I say it probably means that I say it so much I don’t notice that I say it, but maybe not, so.. HELP.

-Canadians live in igloos.
THIS IS THE 21st CENTURY… apart from the few handful of people who live in igloos, I can whole-heartedly assure you we do NOT live in igloos! 😀 LOL.

Ah, little cousins. (They’re like, 10.) CLEARLY THEY NEED MORE EDUCATION. XD

3. They insist on making things difficult and continues to use pennies.

Maybe this is just me still ranting because I had a hella hard time trying to pay when I went shopping, but… THIS IS A VALID POINT. As some of you may know, Canada discontinued the use of pennies—but Americans did not. Which caused me much pain as I tried to pay $3.28 for some donuts and an iced cappuccino Dunkaccino when I struggled to find 3 pennies in my purse. AGHHH.

SO. There we have it! A few of the things I discovered about Americans, while on my trip! This was a lot of fun to write—do let me know your thoughts! But please, do not misunderstand my intention, I wasn’t trying to offend anyone with this post, and if I did, I offer many apologies! ❤

I know there are a lot of Americans out there, and Canadians too, and I’d love to see what you think of the things I listed. And for all of my other-nation friends out there, please don’t shy away from letting me know the things YOU discovered/know of/heard of about Americans (or Canadians!)! I love discussions.

LOL this is so funny, as an American, TV definitely perpetuates those Canadian stereotypes but I like to think most of us don’t actually fall for them xD I have never had Tim Hortons but I really want to now, I must go to Canada! Lol. Dunkin’ Donuts is okay lol, Krispy Kreme is where it’s at 😛 hehe. Sounds like you had fun in the states!

    • Haha yep, TV is what incorporates these stereotypes the most, I’d imagine! And I definitely hope most don’t fall for them either… clearly my cousins are examples of people who do, LOL. 😀 Mm, you should! Tim Hortons is pretty good, and I’m not just saying that ’cause I’m Canadian. 🙂 I didn’t get the chance to go to Krispy Kreme, but now I want to! ❤

      • The show How I Met Your Mother definitely comes to mind lol xD Haha, I trust you, I’ll remember to try it if I’m ever in Canada ^^ Oh yes, they make the best donuts ❤ super unhealthy though lol

  6. Ahahahaha this is amazing. You seriously have never heard of Dunkin’ Donuts?????? But….but….America runs on Dunkin’….

    Also, I went to school with a kid who moved to the States from Canada, and he definitely said a-boot. 🙂 I think that accent depends on which part of Canada you are coming from, though.

    • I know!! My family in Boston were all like, how could you not know of Dunkin’ Donuts? and I was like, uh… 🙂 #awkward
      But yes, I’m surprised myself that I never heard of it before! It seemed to be everywhere—and as you say, America runs on Dunkin’.. XD

      That’s probably it.. I mean, I don’t hear anyone in Ottawa say a-boot, so it’s probably something that goes on more in other parts of Canada.

  7. Entertaining post! I totally agree with you about the penny business. Being an Aussie we got rid of one cent pieces ages ago, so on a trip to USA a few years back, I was amazed they still used them. My purse/wallet was so full and heavy all the time carrying around so many of these nuisance pennies. Aaargh! 🙂

    • Thank you!! Haha yeah, they really become such a nuisance! You guys are lucky you guys got rid of them so early—America should really get rid of them too. I don’t know how Americans use them on a daily basis, LOL. I used them only for a while and I got tired of it!

  9. I’m not sure if there are Tim Horton’s in any other state but they do have them in Michigan, although I’ve never been to one in the 8 years I’ve been living here.

  11. The Whole “Sorry” and “About” thing is all about accents. You probably don’t notice, because you are use to saying it that way. I’m sure there are a LOT of things we Americans say, that every other English speaking country think we say funny. Hell, we even do that to each other.

    I’ve heard that Tim Hortons is amazing. I wish we had it here, personally I think Dunkin Donuts sucks! 😦

    • That’s possible! These stereotypes can’t have come from nowhere, after all! It’s also probable that even if I don’t say them, other people in Canada might.

      It really is! I’ve had some of Dunkin Donuts’ stuff, and even though it’s not totally bad, Tim Hortons is definitely more of my thing—and I’m not just saying that because I’m Canadian, haha. 😀

    • I know right?? One minute I either have too much of them and can’t keep track of them, or I can’t find any of them, ARGH.
      Hahaha I’m glad I didn’t have to deal with tipping much when I was in America… I’m clueless when it comes to that as well. 😉
      Don’t worry about it! 😀 American TV is definitely to blame for most of these stereotypes, I agree.

  14. True. As a Midwestern girl, we don’t really have very many Dunkin’ Donuts at all. They’re really prominent in the East Coast. A lot of the stereotypes come from How I Met Your Mother. I’m not a huge penny fan since I tend to always have a lot of change and most of them are pennies. Great post!

    • That’s pretty interesting, seeing how where I visited it seemed like Dunkin’ Donuts was EVERYWHERE. XD Though that’s probably how Tim Hortons is in Canada (I just don’t notice it as much).
      Haha TV shows definitely seem to be the root of many of these stereotypes!
      Gosh yes, pennies are such a nuisance—and I’ve only had to deal with them for a week! Thank you! ❤

    • Thank you!! LOL, the funny (and kind of sad) thing is that my cousins actually believed in that stuff.. XD
      Haha everyone seems to be so shocked when I say that! I’m kind of surprised myself that I never heard of it before, seeing how it’s so popular in the States, but… I guess somehow I never did…!

    • Nice! You should give it a try one time; it isn’t my absolute favourite, but it isn’t bad. 😉 LOL yeah, it was really amusing seeing how they actually believed it.. Kind of worried for their education right now, haha. 😂 Yay, that’s good to hear!

  19. Not sure if anyone’s mentioned this or not, but clearly you were visiting the wrong states. We actually happen to have Tim Horton’s here in Michigan – well, southeast Michigan, at least – although a Canadian friend of mine tells me they give inferior beans/roasts to the Michigan locations.
