Oh my god. Tahereh Mafi’s amazing-ness was shown through Shatter Me & Destroy Me, but I had no idea how much farther her awesomeness extended. This book was simply amazing!

I’m going to be skipping the quick summary this time, just to make this a spoiler-free review for everyone. 🙂 You’re welcome.

Plot

Amazing. That’s what the plot was. Amazing. There was just so much things that fell into place, and the setting, the storyline, everything, was just so active and engaging! There was a war threat, a rebellion, and special people with the power to change their world, and we just got such a different side to everything than in Shatter Me! (In a good way, of course.) The world-building is extended even further obviously, and we get more glimpses of this interesting and even slightly realistic version of a futuristic world. Great plot!

Characters

The characters were phenomenal. I’m not even joking, the characters were simply amazing. I absolutely loved seeing Juliette develop more as a person, and get a more stronger, more braver mentality. There were times (mainly at the beginning) where I was annoyed with her and her whining, etc. but there was just something about her that made me incapable of disliking her for long. Also, what made it the best was that she didn’t repeat these mistakes as the book continued, she just adapted, and developed so much as a character! I loved seeing it all.

As for the love interests, we have Adam and Warner. I strongly dislike Adam. I used to be Team Adam, but after Destroy Me and this book? No way. Adam’s true person is revealed in part, and he is completely unsuitable for Juliette, and is a complete jerk. That being said, I liked how it all turned out because he played an important role in Juliette’s development, as well as her past. But the past is the past, and while Adam might’ve been a nice fling, Warner is definitely The One.

After reading Destroy Me, I literally fell in love, and his potential as an amazing character is revealed even more in this book! (If that’s even possible!) I absolutely loved him, he’s such a well-written, and beautiful character I just couldn’t get enough. I’m loving him just as much as Will Herondale (from The Infernal Devices) and Raffe (from Penryn & the End of Days) or even more, and that’s saying something! He’s such a unique character that I’m dying to see more of.

A quick note over Kenji : I loved him! Kenji was absolutely hilarious, and I loved how there was so much more to him than what meets the eye. His humor was refreshing (reminded me of Leo from Heroes of Olympus quite a bit!) and I also really enjoyed how he remained firm with Juliette when she was having pity parties.
I also liked the other secondary characters: James, Winston, Brendan, etc: You all rule!

Writing Style

Tahereh Mafi’s writing, like the previous novels, is outstanding once again. It’s so unique, filled with beautiful prose that makes it so much fun to quote! Every word, even the simplest things, seem like poetry in the context of Juliette’s inner voice and thoughts. I loved how even though there’s less of strike-throughs and clusters of words (that described Juliette’s thoughts in Shatter Me) Tahereh Mafi was able to keep Juliette’s voice constant throughout the story.  We see the shell of who Juliette used to be, and who she’s starting to become, all through the writing style.

Our lips
touch
and I know I’m going to split at the seams. He kisses me softly then strongly like he’s lost me and he’s found me and I’m slipping away and he’s never going to let me go.

See what I mean? The words just roll of my tongue, and it’s as if Juliette’s speaking to me herself. Now that’s skilled writing!
