Reading Habits Tag

I found this tag on inspiredbythepage (where I coincidentally also found the Reader Problems Tag) which it was originally created by The BookJazz, and I thought it would be fun to do. So here we go!

1. Do you have a certain place at home for reading?

I tried, but nope, I don’t. I like having things organized and stuff, but having one specific place for reading just ain’t working for me. I read everywhere (except the bathroom, of course); my window seat in my bedroom, at my desk, on my bed, in my sister’s room, the guest room, the kitchen. I often read while eating too, which is when my eReader comes in handy since I don’t want to bend a book too much or get it dirty. 🙂 Although I’ve mostly perfected those little complications.

2. Bookmark or random piece of paper?

Random piece of paper, all the way! I tried a few times to keep a bookmark, but it ended up being misplaced or unused or something along those lines. Mostly I just keep them safely on my shelf. I usually can find a piece of paper lying around somewhere, so when I have to stop reading, and I can’t find my bookmark or whatnot, I’m just like, “Whatever, I’ll use this ripped piece of paper instead.” 😉 I had to use a candy wrapper several times too, since I couldn’t find my bookmark!

3. Can you just stop reading or do you have to stop after a chapter/ a certain amount of pages?

I’ve gotten better at just stopping reading (especially when I was reading in class ;)), but usually I prefer to stop after a chapter, or when a particularly entertaining or action-filled scene kind of cools down. Often though I end up stopping at a few more chapters than planned… I just can’t help it, when I’m especially immersed into a book! “Just this chapter… a few more pages… a few more pages… a few more pages… oh, I can just finish another chapter, then I’ll go…just another chapter… and another…” 😉

4. Do you eat or drink while reading?

I like to, but it’s not a must for me. It feels comforting to chew on something while reading, for some reason. But since I usually quickly get into the world of books, I’m not completely conscious as to what I’m eating or drinking (I could be eating a whole mega-size pack of chips for all I know) so I’m trying not to get too used to eating or drinking while reading. I’ve been pretty good at that recently, actually, so yay! 🙂

5. Multitasking: Music or TV while reading?

Definitely no TV, but music, sometimes. But usually I have a less up-beat song, and at low volume. If I’m really into a book, I barely hear any music, no matter what the volume, but I still keep it at low. 🙂 TV, though, no way. Even if it’s at low volume, I feel compelled to look up and it distracts from my reading.

6. One book at a time or several at once?

I prefer to have one book at a time, since I get to focus solely on that one book, which makes for a more clear reading experience, but lately I have several books at once that I’m reading. I’m okay with that as well, as I’ve gotten better at distinguishing what’s happening in each book and not getting confused too much. I’m usually able to finish all the books I picked up, unless I’m reading, like, 5 books at once, in which case I focus on maybe 2-3 of them, and then read the other ones separately or something.

7. Reading at home or everywhere?

Absolutely everywhere! I have downloaded a Kobo app in my iPod, and have an Overdrive app where I borrow ebooks from the library, so I’m able to read basically everywhere I go since I keep my iPod with me at all times. Along with that, I have my Kobo, on which I also read books often. Whenever I’m on a bus or in the car, or even in line waiting for something, I usually bring out my iPod or Kobo (although I make an effort to appreciate my surroundings and stuff…sometimes). I don’t make a habit of carrying around much physical copies, since it becomes a bit difficult sometimes to have a thick book with me everywhere, but my point being is that I read everywhere.(Sorry for the rambling there!) 🙂

8. Reading out loud or silently in your head?

Silently in my head! Ever since when I first started seriously reading, I’ve always read in my head. I can’t stand to read out loud, unless it’s for class or something, because it just distracts from understanding the story. Suddenly I’m worried about how my voice sounds, voicing the words clearly, and all those extra troubles that I do not need to go through reading in my head!

9. Do you read ahead or even skip pages?

Umm… whaaaat? I have no idea what you’re talking about! 😉 Just kidding. I do read ahead, but rarely. I can’t help it, but usually it’s accidental. I might be looking through the page checking to see how many chapters left in the book, or how many pages ’till I finish the chapter, and I happen to see a phrase or word that catches my attention. And then one thing leads to the next, and I end up giving myself a minor or even a major spoiler when I’m unlucky.

10. Breaking the spine or keeping it like new?

Keeping it like new! That’s one of the reasons I like ebooks so much, since I don’t have to worry about how the book will look after I read it. Hardcovers are also good for that, and so I like getting those as well. Sadly, some of my books ended up having bent pages, and broken spine. 😦 I had to hide away some of the particularly bad ones. On the bright side, they’re not books I read often these days or important/favorite ones.

11. Do you write in your books?

Nope! If I ever need to make a not of something, I use a piece of paper nearby or a Post-It note. If I’m using my Kobo, I just type in my note. 🙂

So that’s it for this tag! Hope you enjoyed reading my answers and I tag:

Of course, you don’t have to do it, but feel free to do it if you want! 🙂 I’d love to read your answers!

Thanks for stopping by, and see you next time!

  1. I’m in agreement with most of your answers, especially for 3. I have a hard time stopping at the chapter I plan to as well (darn those end of the chapter cliffhangers). Thanks for tagging me, Analee! I’ll try to get to it in a couple of weeks! ^.^

  2. I can definitely read with music on but never with the television on. As far as skipping pages I do sometimes do that and it’s for the same reason that you stated above. If a word catches my attention, too I will end up reading a page or two. Sometimes it just can’t be helped.

    • Exactly, I don’t understand how people are able to fully concentrate on a book when a TV is on! It’s really distracting. And just today I found myself caught by a word on a few pages ahead and just happened to read the paragraph… And then the page…😄

  3. I totally admire people who have the guts to eat/drink while reading! I’m always so worried I might get them on my books. Thanks for tagging me! I look forward to doing this! Have a great day! ❤

    • 😀 I’ve been doing it from the start, so the habit got built into me before I even started getting worried about the book’s pages! 🙂 No problem, I look forward to reading you post! Have a great day as well! 😉
